On Marriage & Family: Should We Change Our View?

Almost all known societies recognize marriage. Yes, almost. Different from what most people would know and believe, I learned that there is the Na people in Yunan, China where marriage is absent which thus generate no concept of husband nor father. Men are considered simply as the ‘waterer’ for the land (women) to ‘create’ children.  This simple fact alone indicates that marriage is almost a human universal.
Then, there is a term called family. Do people have to get married to form a family? Is the term ‘family’ necessarily refer to the married couple with its children? Of course not. There are way more intricate facts that constitute what family is or what families are. What about kinship? It turns out that despite the rapid industrialization in some parts of the world, kinship still play an important role in maintaining and securing what constitute a family. For example, where one resides after getting married has something to do or influence what kind of family he/she will have eventually.
Why most culture prohibit incest? Why certain cultures/societies consent poligamy or poliandry? Why certain countries have (until recently) legalized same-sex marriage? Why transnational or/and multicultural families have flourished? What about religion-based marriage? These used to be so incomprehensibly hard to grasp but now...things are changing. And other ‘whys’ that concocts our mind regarding ‘marriage’.
Based on those points of view, we really need to open up our mind to the diverse facts about ‘marriage’ and the consequences that entail its process.
For instance, the fact about postmarital residence is one of the determining factor about what kind of family a woman or a man will have after marriage. In Korea, as we know of, women are supposed to live with her husband’s family/kin after marriage (virilocal residence), but now—to what I know of—more and more married couple prefer to live separately from their parents and form a nuclear family, thus creating an independent household (neolocal residence). The reason is simple, i.e.modern couples’ reluctance to be regarded as inadequate/incapable of managing their new family.
Although less common, there is also a uxorilocal residence where the groom/husband has to move into his wife’s family. ( I was one of these examples).  Not that it is a common practice in Java, it is just that due to some circumstances, I was compelled to live with my wife’s family. Even when we have our own house, I must live with my parents-in-law  because my wife happens to be the only daughter living in the same house. Especially after my father-in-law died, the pressure of having to stay with my wife’s family could not have been greater. We must take care of our mother. And this is a common practice in Java. No matter how desperate we want to form a nuclear family, if you happen to marry the youngest daughter of a family, there are chances ( I said 'chances') that you may have to live with your wife’s family.
Now that some technological advancements have taken places in (at times) an  unprecedented manner, the way people think about their own kinship or family have also changed. Artificial insemination, surrogate mothers, adopted kids by same-sex couples (in some countries) turn out to be a challenging frontier in term of deciding as to whether ‘kinship’ or ‘families’ should be based on (pure) blood ties alone.

Me Back Then...and Now..

My brother 'Wawan' and my sister 'Nana' and me...
I suppose it was taken when I was in my high school. Oh, my...
Now, each of us has married with children. Time has gone so fast...and look at us now..
we've grown up... and.. me for sure.
I started losing my hair and ...practically I could call myself as not having any hair; especially since I always have my hair cut every 10 days. Even until now...
Back then..I used to feel not that confident in showing off my baldness. So, I was often seen wearing a headscarf or any other headdress^-^over my head.
Or...wearing any winter cap that may fit my style. Well, in short...I'd do anything to cover my head from being flaunted open for public showing.(chuckles)^^.
Surely..at times I still find it ridiculous and ..a bit unbeliavable that I did have some hair back then.
I did not know what had happened...but one thing for sure...
...going out without a headdress or any covering would be unthinkable....^^
BUT NOW.....
This is me....as of 2013.
Happy New Year to you, Suray.
Well....I am accepting myself as who I am . ..

Paprika .....party

This is a kind of new post into my blog. I mean...the theme is about...fruits. no...vegetables. Paprika. Just bought three fresh-looking colorful paprika from a nearby market.

Simply intrigued by their colors, I bought three of them for just 2450 Won. So, it was pretty much cheaper than the ones I bought...in Winter...when everything was overpriced.

Take the party started....by clicking on the camera...and got each member of the family got a pose with these cute little veggies.

My turn...to take the paprika and got them all held on my palm and ready for camera.
What a summer night action it was...

The flash light was way too bright, I guess. But, that's what my wife wanted to.

Now the blurry effect of the camera sort of soothed in the effect of having the colorful paprika party.
Another way to spend a hot summer night at home.........

More Birthday Cake's pics

Another prolonged story of what I could have done with the cake.......: not only that we could enjoy it by eating it earnestly.....^^, but....we could also take a closer look at how delicate it was and how tempting it was for us to savor our savory-laden tongue.....:) (read: appetite)

Here are the pics of the cake that we could have just swallowed into the digesting tummy of ours. Instead of just doing 'just that', we came up with an idea of taking every bit of its piece and angle into a relentlessly perpetual palatable cake of my 38th birthday bash (no.....just kidding)!

There were no bashes at all.
It was just a simple 'silent' celebration with my family.
Alhamdulillah ....that I am blessed with the gifts of being able to breathe......with all of the possibilities I have right now..... and be what I am now.
Surely....I also would like to thank my family: my wife and two lovely daughters.

So, these pics simply assert the facts that I am being grateful....for all of the colorfully wondrous life I had, I am having, I will have.....

Family pictures at Nami island

A nice weather...well...almost!
"I love you, Mom"

"Love you, too, Freya"

~Freya & her Daddy~

(back)from left: Meity, Suray, Putri, Wenny, Jobirson
(front) from left: Freya, Eyra

At the riverside, waiting for the boat to dock...
Perfect spot for taking pictures.......splendid!
That's why we did some shots with the family there.
The lining up tall pine trees that dotted the island was a perfect place for this occasion.
What more could we want......but.....the warmth of being able to share the moments with the family and friends alike.
Eyra & Freya seemed to enjoy her time with us.
As for me, of course...I did, too.
so did my friends.......^^
An afternoon during Winter.....in Nami.

Taking the family out in Winter

Actually, I should have put this entry earlier but since I did not write anything about it yet,  I might as well put it now. So, the pictures tell about the time when were taking a stroll along the university in one Winter morning.

I guess it was Saturday.  All of us were dressed up or wrapped up(?) in Winter clothes that we could think of so as we did not feel the shivering cold weather.  Luckily, it was  a bright sunny Saturday morning.

To capture the moment before going straight into the subway, we were passing by the main building of our campus. Oh....we live in a house right behind the campus so every time we go out somewhere, we have no other choices but to pass the whole campus right into its entrance before heading towards the Metro station.

My kids become so accustomed to playing and passing by the campus yard be it in a broad daylight or night.

In front of the house

On our way out from the frontyard of our home sweet home in Imundong, Korea. The 30-minute preparation every time we go out is hinted on the thick jackets with its pheriperal outfits that go along with them. It is Winter: the simplest reason as to why we dress up like this.

The house visage does indicate one of the major characteristics of Korean houses; especially the one for rents. The red bricks dotted the houses’ visage.  We love the house since it has a relatively wide open frontyard where our daughters can play or ride on their bikes in Summer ( a long time to wait, eh).

The first train (a.k.a. AREX & Metro) ride in Seoul

I planned to pick up my family via AREX since it was cheaper than that of taking the Limousine Bus. Apart fromt that, I also wanted to make sure that my family could enjoy the best of their time even from their first day of arrival in Korea....i.e. by taking the train back to Seoul.

Eyra and Freya were so excited as they could see the first glimpse of what Korea was like through the windows of the AREX ...of course ...before the train subduing itself into the underground tunnel that would make it categorized into Metro or subway(back then).

Anyway...the  trip to Seoul by AREX and Metro turned out to be just fine...^^
After getting off at the Seoul Station where we had to transfer to Imundong where we live,  a diorama of a city with its trains operated by KORAIL  caught the attention of my kids.

So, we stopped there and let them enjoy their first enthusiasm of being in Seoul....despite the freezing winter breeze. They liked it, though.

Family Reunion in Korea

The topic of today is the arrival of my family that I had been waiting for. Finally, it was December 10, 2011: the day when my family came to Korea.

I just could not wait to meet the angels: Eyra and Freya: my daughters who (I’m sure) missed me as well.

I prepared for the day with lots of preparations. One thing for sure: the two-room house that we rent was ready right before they came. In fact, I moved into the new home the night before they came to Korea.

OK...shortly speaking: I woke up early to go to Incheon International Airport (IAA) by AREX (Airport Express) from Seoul Station. I thought it was one of the best highlights that Seoul has to offer for all of the world travellers.

From Seoul station, it took only 50 minutes or so to the IAA. In the wee early hour, I managed to arrive at the airport just in time to meet my family. I was happy as well as nervous for having to wait for their arrival. It was like a feeling of having to meet them for the first time.
Anyhow...the information board at the arrival hall finally showed that the Garuda Flight from Jakarta had just landed safely. I was ecstatic. Could not wait to meet my family. After for about 45 minutes of waiting.....after their landing....I finally managed to see and meet them again after 3 months. ^^

I could see the surprised and can-not-believe look on my daughters’ faces as they were running towards me. Their expressions were like....”So, it  IS true that Daddy is IN Korea just like Mommy told us.” Funny, eh? Well, I mean...for the past three months...the only way we connected to each other was through phone, internet, or Skype-ing.

So, it was like too-good-to-be-true kind of feeling.
Being united again....was so deliberately .....freshly ....indescribably....soothing.
Ok...then..came the hugging and kisses moment.....ignoring the fact that we were in the midst of others. But.....it was unplanned for.
Then...came the time when we had to keep up with one another. My angels never let their hands off me as soon as we met...right until we got ourselves to Seoul by AREX again.

In between, we managed to take some pictures as tokens of memories of their arrival to Korea. At that time, IAA was already decked with the Season’s best greetings and nuance and atmosphere. X-mas was everywhere...or should I say... the Winter festivities were alreay there as if to meet and greet all of the travellers who came to Korea during this Winter.
All in all...it was such a great day....one thing for sure..because I met my family again....^^
