Pak Kirno (that's how we affectionately call him) is our neighborhood kyai or religious teacher. He holds his Doctor degree, he is a professor at a university in Jogjakarta, he chairs one of the Islamic schools or pesantren with lots of students in Jogjakarta.
He comes to our real estate neighborhood to monitor and keep the religious activities among its residents, mostly the ibu-ibu and bapak-bapak--not to say the least...the youngsters as well.
So, on Saturday night he was entitled to be the speaker during Tarawih prayer at the 6th day of Ramadan at Al Jihad Mosque in our neighborhood.
I did not realize that that was Pak Kirno's turn to be the speaker until I notice a familiar voice of the Isya' prayer's imam. I then realized that I would have him as the speaker of the Tarawih. Yep, I was right.
So, this is particularly what I learned from him last night.
He once again checked and made sure whether there were any familiar faces who were showing up at the Mosque for praying. As he might have expected, he noticed some familiar faces and some new unfamiliar faces. He also noticed some familiar faces that he could not find among the group.
He told us that it was a common sight in almost every Mosque in the world, or least in most part of the areas he had been: in that......mosques are commonly deserted during non-Ramadan month and suddenly lots of people come and pray at the Mosque--which is a great thing to behold.
But, alas.....some people who call themselves Moslems do not or have not (yet) understood the great significance of coming to the Mosque, especially during the holy month of Ramadan. This is...something that he wanted to share with us last night.
He encouraged us to keep enlivening up the Mosque by attending sholat jamaah (praying together in groups); rather than doing it alone at home, once again especially during Ramadan.
One particular note that he mentioned was when he talked about some people's stupidity of not realizing the great pahala (gift, mercy, grace, rewards) from Allah if only more people knew the true significance of coming to the Mosque to pray...once again (especially) for Isya' praying and Subuh (dawn) praying.
I was hooked by his words.
I never realized it, well..I did and I do...but the stupidity and the laziness that sometimes (or more often than not) preoccupied my qolbu (heart) darkened or hampered my niat (intention) of walking, let alone coming to the Mosque.
He mentioned that if only people knew the great rewards for those who always come to the Mosque for Isya' and Subuh praying, they would do anything to come to the Mosque, even if they had to crawl.
Gosh...it was just like a slap and a great smack on my face!!!
Seldom do I come to the Mosque for subuh praying!!!
It is such a disgrace.
Pak Kirno reminded us that despite the fact that Muhammad's ummah (adherents) live shorter than those of the previous prophet's, they have the privilege of being able to attain the highest rewards from Allah simply because of/due to/ thanks to the holy month of Ramadan.
Muhammad's adherents live up to 100 years old or on the average we live around 70 years old....(depending on the countries--at times). No people in the present millenium live up to 500 or 800 years old just like the people at the time of Noah or Abraham or any other prophets. So, how the Muslims of present day can serve God or pray to God at the same length of time as those in the previous milleniums? Not a chance. It would be unthinkable for us to pray or serve Allah for that long. Once again....simply because we live only up to 100 years old. Only a few who managed to pass it.
Then he also mentioned that it would be unthinkable and it was not an easy feat to knock on the Heaven's door if we do not pray right or worse...we pray less than we should have.
But once again....only with the mercy and greatness of Allah that we can attain the amount of time as those during the previous prophet. In other words, we can pray and got pahala as much as those who live up to 800 years old thanks to the holy month of Ramadan. It is because Allah has promised to increase, enhance His rewards as much as 70 times bigger than any other month, but Ramadan. And all Muslims must know this particular much talked about Holy Night or 1000 month-night or Lailatul Qodar or the night when Angels come to earth so close to humans (by Allah's order) to give humans their highest positions in the eyes of Allah.
Pak Kirno mentioned that Allah has designated Lailatul Qodar to have the same significance of 1000 months which is equal to around 83 years. So, if one Muslim prays and dedicates himself only at that particular night, he would have Allah's greatest grace and mercy as if he has prayed for 83 years!!!. Now imagine if every Ramadan every year that same person gets Lailatul Qodar. Say...he gets 10 times of his lifetime serving his best during Ramadan......it simply means that he has lived around 800 years. That is the simple logic of Allah's greatness.
But once again....the biggest challenge is that......no one knows when Lailatul Qodar is. All Muslims know for sure that it is one of the last 10 days of Ramadan. So, it means that the last ten days of Ramadan is the holiest days in Ramadan that all good Muslims must prepare to meet and attain.
(Oh God....Oh My.......I do not think that I have ever been in those nights). As long as I recollect, I never fully fulfilled my service for every last 10 day of Ramadan up until now. I am now 37 years old...and yet...I am not sure if I have done my best every Ramadan.)
I feel so ashamed and feel like a loser who has wasted the best chance a Muslim can get.
Astagfirullah ..Ya Allah please give us Your Mercy and Your Compassion so as to make me become of the luckiest ones that You have prepared to meet and be in Your Lailatul Qodar. Amin
Terima kasih Pak Kirno. I should thank him for reminding us about this great thing in Ramadan.
