I just got a letter from my daughter's school about what parents should do about their children's diary.
As a parent, one should be aware that writing a diary is not a matter of whether one writes it in all grammatically correct ones. So, we should not try to fix or tell them even if their grammar or writing is incorrect. It is because the grammatical order or lessons are taught in classes.
Let them write whatever they want to. Not necessarily about something special. Even everyday stuffs are good subjects to write about. Even if that particular habit is a daily one. It is simply because we should know that what happened yesterday and what happens today are two different notions.
It is unnecessary to write something long. As long as they write something they do, it's fine. Please note that it is not about what they DID, rather it is about something they DO. So, just when they are in the MIDDLE of doing something, when they are IN it, it'd be good to write something down about it. Even it that thing already happened, more important than writing about what happened, it is better to write down about what happens as they do it or doing it.
Even, drawing a picture, and only drawing a picture in our children's diary is part of writing.
Diary is not a reflective or contemplative piece of writing. Instead, it is just about what happens. Even if our children did something wrong or made mistakes, it's enough for them to write what happens. That being said, so it is unnecessary to write something like" I shouldn't have done that" or " I will do better next time" or " I will never do that anymore". Instead, just let the diary speaks what happens without having to write what our children feel about it.
But, if they DO write about it, just let it be....
What one thinks and feels about what happens are not the most important thing to know. Instead, as long as they write what happens to them, it is more than enough. If they truly write about it, feeling and emotions will tag along naturally within the words.
We should trust what they write. We should never interfere what they are writing about. Give them some time and let them explore what happens in their life...
each day as it is happening...
